Unique Colomares castle, built in honor of Christopher Columbus

We all remember the famous phrase by American writer Mark TWAIN, in which he was being ironic about the discovery of America: "it is Great that America was discovered, but it would be much more wonderful if Columbus sailed past". But the Spaniards considered their country the birthplace of the famous traveler, and they belong to its discoveries much better. In 1994, the 500-year anniversary is significant for America events in the town Benalmaden completed the construction of the castle Colomares (Colomares), dedicated to the legendary Columbus.

The architecture of the castle attracts the attention, first and foremost, the combination of several different styles. Some elements of Gothic style, there is also the handwriting of the Byzantine, Romanesque, and Moorish styles. Interestingly, the author of this architectural masterpiece Esteban Martin all the work took 7 years, although he has no special education and all his life practiced medicine. He only had two assistants that just put a brick. They had to learn all the subtleties of construction, since in addition to the bricks, they were dealing with marble and stone, and even wood.

The author is not accidentally used in his masterpiece of stylistic heterogeneity, thus, he combined in one lock the elements of the three Spanish cultures of the middle ages – Christianity, Judaism and Islam. In addition, the castle is decorated with three ships, symbolizing the ships that made it to the coveted shores of America.

Today Colomares is one of the most popular tourism destinations Benalmadena. Of course, the historical value of it is not, but will appeal to all fans of modern fantasy.
