Energy consumes 15% of global water resources
The International Energy Agency (IEA) published a report on the amount of water consumed by various industries in 2012. The agency said energy has increased its use of water, calling it a “thirsty resource.” The data is available for free on the official IEA website.
The report reveals how much water each industry uses, and the increasing consumption of this resource in the energy sector is alarming. IEA Executive Director Maria van der Hoeven says the analysis will allow each country to develop a plan for the most economical and efficient use of water. The need for water is growing every year, and in some regions it is already insufficient for the normal operation of the energy sector. The authors of the report suggested that by 2035, due to the increasing popularity of biofuels and the high need for energy innovation, the amount of water used will increase by 85%. Van der Hoeven reminded that control of water consumption should be one of the priorities in the world.
