Anti-appetite – new means for losing weight

British scientists are developing a pill that will help to reduce the feeling of hunger.

Researchers from Imperial College discovered that people feel full when eating fruit and vegetables because they contribute to the release of acetate in the intestine. Scientists thought that a tablet of this substance may help people to reduce the amount of food without experiencing any discomfort.

Large amounts of acetate are released when plants and vegetables are digested by bacteria in the colon. The scientists tracked the molecule and found: it is, after all, been found in the hypothalamus of the brain that controls the feeling of hunger.

Professor frost says: "Our study showed that the release of acetate is Central to how fiber suppresses appetite and it can help scientists solve the problem of overeating. The main objective is to develop the approach that will deliver the amount of acetate needed to suppress appetite but in acceptable and safe for humans."
