"Bad neighborhoods" is dangerous to children's psyche

Children who grew up in "bad areas" that show aggression to a greater extent than their peers from more prosperous neighborhoods. Moreover, this trend is not in a specific country, and most countries in the world. This conclusion was made as a result of research by scientists from Duke University (NC, USA). The results of this work the experts highlighted today in the journal of the Societie. It should be noted that in such a wide scale the question of the dependence of child behavior on the conditions of residence were studied for the first time. Before this issue was raised only in the framework of the country.

The worst neighborhoods in the city equally affect children in different countries

To follow the trend of aggressive behavior in children, researchers interviewed 1293 family of nine countries: China, Colombia, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, Philippines, Sweden, Thailand and the United States. In order to determine the level of "danger" areas where the participating families, experts conducted a survey. They also evaluated the behavior of the child, guided by the list of manifestations of aggression. Not the last place in it held items such as "scream" and "threat to others".

After the survey it was found that in those areas which were regarded as "particularly dangerous", the children were the most aggressive. The indicators were the same for different countries. That is, in all nine countries living in the "bad area" had a negative effect on children's behaviour

Among the countries whose representatives participated in the survey, there are many differences in economic and social terms. Some of them are developed, some are in the process of development. But, according to expert Ann Skinner: "We have seen that living in a "bad" area can cause children's aggressive behavior regardless of the country of residence".

Children's aggression – whether to blame the parents?

Scientists suggest that "bad neighborhood" on the child's behavior is affected indirectly. The immediate cause may be parenting. The fact that all the interviewed families with unsafe streets and unite not only children's aggression, and rude behavior of parents. The extent to which the child is affected by "raising the streets", and in a sharp tone moms and dads, scientists will find out in the future. Interests of experts the question: how aggression parents depend on to stay in a "bad" area.
