Engineers offered contact lenses with antimicrobial coating
New technology offers contact lenses coated with an antimicrobial peptide.
The study by researchers at the University of South Wales helped to create a safe antimicrobial coating for lenses based on the peptide melimine. This will significantly reduce the risk of infections, as stated by the developers. "Research has shown that melimine coated contact lenses can be safely for people without any serious side effects".
The researchers conducted a series of experiments to assess the safety of contact lenses coated with melimine, designed to reduce the risk of inflammation and infection. Melimine is not an antibiotic, but rather cationic peptide with broad spectrum antimicrobial activity. In a three-week study on rabbits was used normal disposable contact lenses. Some signs of toxic effects on the eye, infections and inflammations in animals was not found. A subsequent test on volunteers also showed no negative effects of wearing new optical devices.
