Stem cells useful for treating heart
Stem cell therapy can potentially reduce the number of deaths from cardiovascular disease, in addition to standard drugs and surgery, said scientists at the University of Oxford.
Stem cells extracted from the bone marrow of the patient and placed in the damaged heart tissue, can be an effective method for the treatment of heart disease. Dr. Oxford ENKA Martin-Rendon said: "This is proof that stem cell therapy has benefits for patients with heart disease. However, after some research you need to proceed to larger clinical trials to test long-term effects."
A group of researchers found that stem cell therapy using bone marrow cells has led to fewer deaths from cardiovascular disease and heart failure, compared with placebo or standard therapy. The new method also reduces the chance of re-entry of patients to the hospital and leads to improved heart function.
However, researchers say that we need to wait for the results of large clinical trials to be more confident in the effectiveness of cell therapy.
The group used data from 23 randomized controlled trials involving 1255 people, where all participants received standard treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Martin-Rendon said: "it is not Yet clear which types of stem cells work best and why stem cell therapy works for some people but not effective for others. We need to figure out what's different in people it does not help."
