Germany leads in electric vehicle production but not in consumption

Despite being a leading manufacturer of electric cars, Germany is among the countries where driving an electric car is not so fashionable.

A total of 2,800 electric cars were sold in Germany in the fourth quarter of 2013, according to a joint report by German business weekly WirtschaftsWoche and international consulting firm McKinsey.

This figure puts Germany, along with China, in the last place among the main countries producing cars. In France, for example, automakers sold almost twice as many electric cars, and nearly 30,000 electric cars were sold in the United States.

By 2019, Germany is estimated to produce around 440,000 electric cars a year.

More than 400,000 electric cars have been sold worldwide since 2009. Germany accounted for only about 5% of this figure. However, WirtschaftsWoche and McKinsey include Germany on par with Japan and the US as the leading manufacturer of electric cars. In five years, Germany is expected to produce 440,000 electric cars a year, just behind Japan, with a projected production of 450,000 electric vehicles a year, ahead of the United States, which is expected to produce about 360,000 units a year, and China with a figure of 290,000 vehicles.
