Magnetic cooling system – new technology for refrigerators

A team of canadian-Bulgarian researchers have developed a new approach for magnetic cooling that much more efficient and more environmentally friendly than today's standard refrigeration system.

A promising method of magnetic cooling is a promising technology for many reasons, ranging from low-energy to failure the use of harmful refrigerants.

A team of researchers from Canada and Bulgaria have conducted experiments with ferromagnetic materials. They are known to heat up when magnetized and cool down when you remove the magnetic field. A physicist from the University of Sherbrooke (Quebec), Mohamed Balli says: "the Presence of a magnetic field causes the atomic lattice of ferromagnetic materials to redevelop that causes fever. The lack of magnetic field means the ordering of the lattice and leads to a decrease in temperature".

In experiments with multiferroic HoMn2O5, scientists have discovered that magnitotelluricheskie effect can be obtained by simple rotation of the crystal from this material, without moving from the zone of magnetic influence. According to experts, this discovery is an important step on the way to the technology of magnetic cooling, efficient and environmentally friendly.

As noted by Bally: "using the rotating magnetocaloric effect means that the energy absorbed by the cooling machine can be largely reduced. It also opens doors to build simplified, compact and efficient magnetic cooling systems in the future."
