In Oxford are "smart" glasses for the visually impaired

Smart glasses developed at Oxford University for the blind at present, for the first time is tested using 30 visually impaired volunteers.

Dr. Stephen Hicks explains: "the Idea of smart glasses is to give people with poor vision an aid that boosts their awareness of what is happening around them, to give them greater freedom and independence, and significantly improve the quality of life."

Tech device consists of a video camera on a glass frame, processing unit and software. Transparent electronic display shows the people and obstacles around you. Camera with special software allows the visually impaired to have a much better overview of each item, to see her more clearly. Glass will not replace the vision, but help with spatial awareness. "We are, after all, want to have a product that will look like a normal pair of glasses and cost no more than a few hundred pounds — about the same as a smartphone," says Dr. Hicks.
