Scientists learned how to "print" the circulatory system
An international team created the first bodies using 3Dсканера that include a full vascular network for transporting blood through organs.
The revolutionary breakthrough was made by a group of scientists from the universities of Harvard, Sydney, Stanford and mit. Dr. Luiz Bertassoni says: "thousands of people die each year due to the shortage of organs for transplantation. Many undergo surgical removal of tissues and organs in connection with cancer. Imagine that you are able to come to the hospital and print right on, with all the cells, proteins and blood vessels in the right place just by clicking on the print button on your computer. Our discovery is an important new step towards achieving these goals."
Cells need quick access to nutrients, oxygen and efficient waste management. That's why "vascularization" — a functional transportation system is Central to engineering biological tissues and organs. "One of the biggest challenges for the engineering of large tissues and organs of the growing network of blood vessels and capillaries," says Dr Bertassoni. The main advantage of the new technology of bio-printing is the possibility of manufacturing large three-dimensional micro-vascular channels capable of supporting life, and, with sufficient accuracy, to meet the needs of individual patients.
