The ban on talking on the phone does not make the roads safer

Researchers from the University of Colorado argued that the ban on talking on a cell phone during the trip, does not affect the number of accidents.

The researchers reviewed more than a million accidents on the roads of California, and found that the prohibition of telephone conversations in the car without a proper headset, have reduced the number of collisions. The researchers chose a time period of six months, before and after the introduction of such a ban. As stated in the conclusions:

We find no evidence of national reduction in accidents as a result of the ban.

Professor and study author Daniel Chaffin says:

If it is really so dangerous, and if some people refused to use their phones, we would expect to find some decrease in accidents. But we have not found any statistical argument which points to a decline.

Caffin added:

The separation of these effects will be useful for the developers of such policies in other States. However, our results show that a ban on using hand-held mobile phone while driving may not give the desired increase in traffic safety.
