The picturesque fishing village of Marsashlokk in Malta

The name of the city Marsaxlokk in translation means the southeastern harbor, it is located on the island of Malta. This picturesque fishing settlement makes a very pleasant and joyful impression, especially on weekends, when the local market begins a brisk trade on the shores of the bay.

Particular attention is paid to fishing boats. They are painted in very bright colors, blue, green, red, yellow. All boats are unique in their kind, and some of them even have images. For example, the eye of Assyris, often depicted on board, is considered a talisman protecting the ship and its master. Some of the boats resemble Venetian gondolas. These peacefully swaying on the water traditional boats fishermen call Luzza. Their shapes and colors have hardly changed since ancient Phoenician times.

The bay is open to buyers and the fish market, where only the freshest fish from the latest catches are on sale. Fishermen go fishing every morning and come back with a good catch.

On Saturdays and Sundays, the second-hand market is especially popular among local residents. It seems that residents prefer second-hand shopping centers, because it is here that almost all the necessary things are sold, very, very inexpensive. Marsashlokk does not have any famous and outstanding monuments, however, the overall picture of the village is permeated with the Maltese spirit and local flavor. In 1798, Napoleon’s army landed in these places, but there are no monuments that confirm this fact. Here you can relax on the terraces of one of the many fish cafes and restaurants located along the coast.
