How Good Movies Affect Your Dog's Breed Choice

This was told by biologists, analyzing the file of the American Kennel Club and the most popular films involving dogs.

The American Kennel Club has one of the largest dog databases in the world. There are 65 million dogs in this organization. Information about the dogs registered in this club, scientists compared with the 87 most popular and commercially successful films with the participation of the “friend of man”.

It turned out that the fashion for a particular breed directly depends on how many people watched the film in the first weekend of rental.

Interestingly, the fashion for a particular breed after the release of the film remains unchanged for ten years, and is completely correlated with whether the film turned out to be popular or not.

So, after the release of one of the films included in the top ten most loved by the audience, the number of purchased dogs of the breed, which was shown in the film, increased to 800 thousand. After the famous film Lassie Comes Home was released in 1943, 40% more Collie dogs got into the register of the dog club. And bobtails after the 1959 release of “Sharp Dog” became more popular by as much as 100 times.

It was also found that at the end of the last century, the correlation between successful films and the popularity of a particular breed of dog weakened slightly. Scientists have suggested that this may be due to the fact that in the 1940s there were few films with the participation of dogs, only one such film was released annually. But by the beginning of this century, more than seven such films are released every year.

Surprisingly, the fashion for a particular breed does not correlate with the health and temperament of dogs. According to the researchers, such important indicators as a friendly character, longevity or a small predisposition to hereditary diseases, do not affect the popularity of the breed.
