New truck design could save the lives of many cyclists

Scientists from Loughborough University, UK, proposed a new design of the cab truck that offers drivers a better view of the road around them. Scientists say that, thanks to their design, can save the lives of many pedestrians and cyclists.

According to scientists, the redesign of the cabin will increase forward and lateral field of vision of the driver by 50 percent, compared to traditional cabs.

The increased visibility is achieved thanks to the 80 cm rounded nose of the cabin and smaller cockpit, which is slightly below the driver in a sitting position.

Such changes should significantly reduce the blind spots that are the cause of many accidents. Last year in London 9 out of 14 cyclists were killed by heavy vehicles.

The main problem of any fundamental design changes is the cost of retrofitting existing trucks with new, more secure design. The trucks themselves are expensive, and if the company has a large number of models – it is hard to imagine what is required to upgrade the entire party.

However, it's an interesting idea, which could make roads safer.
