What You don't know about your smartphone
Depriving people of the opportunity to use mobile phones causes them anxiety and adversely affects the ability to perform mental tasks such as crosswords. The experiment conducted by researchers from the University of Missouri-Columbia, has shown some serious psychological and physiological effects experienced by the owners of iPhone, when their smartphone is not around.
The authors of the experiment concluded that iPhone users should not leave their phones in everyday situations that require special attention, such as exams, attendance at the conference, meeting or carrying out important tasks at work. According to them, failure to observe this recommendation may lead to a weakening of cognitive functions.
The study's lead author Russell Clayton of the school of journalism of the University of Missouri, said that the results of the study suggests the following: iPhone owners perceive their smartphones as an extension of themselves, without which they feel incomplete.
It was found that the iPhone users couldn't answer incoming calls because solved puzzles to find words, there was an increase in heart rate, increased blood pressure, a feeling of anxiety and depressed mood. The subjects also dropped the performance of mental work (number of words found in the puzzle) in comparison with the situation when their smartphones were next to them.
The participants of the experiment said that they take part in the test of the new wireless monitor for monitoring blood pressure. The puzzle first volunteers guessed, holding the iPhone at yourself. Then they were asked to surrender their phones, which was allegedly created interference in the work of a fictional medical device. Collected phones put in the other end of the room, and the users have given a new puzzle.
The inability to answer an incoming call (because of the remoteness of the phone) while solving the next problems led to the fact that the subjects felt a strong anxiety, they have a frequent pulse, increased blood pressure, and significantly degraded performance of mental work.
The results of the study were published in the journal of Computer-Mediated Communication.
