Underground farm in an abandoned tunnels of London

Growing Underground is a promising project, in which a small group of businessmen from England created the world's first fully underground farm. It was designed as a method for the production of local and organic high quality products. Abandoned tunnels have become an ideal place for the project.

The farm has already shown positive results — the first one here raised greens and a variety of salads that will be delivered to London restaurants, supermarkets and wholesalers.

Products are grown in a depth of 33 m below the level of the streets of London in the abandoned tunnels of the Second world war (previously used as bomb shelters for the residents of the city). The farm is located about two miles from the city centre and takes approximately 2.5 acres (approximately 1 hectare) of tunnels. If necessary, this area can accommodate 8,000 people. However, now it is used as agricultural land.

As it turned out, the underground farm has a number of advantages. Firstly, this location allows you to grow food all year round because of weather and seasonal changes here have no effect. Secondly, the owners of underground farms don't use pesticides, and hydroponics system uses 70 percent less water than traditional agriculture in the open field. In addition, the lighting system and irrigation also requires little energy.

In the short term, entrepreneurs are planning to sell the first batch of environmentally friendly products, among which the sprouts of peas, several varieties of radish, mustard, coriander, red amaranth, celery, parsley and arugula. In addition, perhaps in the future will involve neighboring tunnels for farm expansion down the line.published
