Scientists have discovered a termite mound older than two thousand years

"The large size of the termite mounds testified that their age exceeds the life expectancy of the Queen, who on average live 20 years," the researchers write in an article published in the journal Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology.

Abandoned termite mounds are found on the territory of the Republic of the Congo by a team of researchers from Ghent University (Belgium) and the University of Lubumbashi (Congo) under the leadership of Hans Erence was dated by radiocarbon Dating. They were built by the termites of the species Macrotermes falciger.

Found 750-year-old mound has a height of about three meters, and the oldest one is six meters. It should be noted that this is not the impressive size of the termite mounds: being excellent engineers, these insects are able to build a house of up to 10 meters in height.

The researchers suggested that the old mound was abandoned by its inhabitants two thousand years ago. It appears, however, that insects regularly used it 500-800 years ago, at a particularly warm period in the region. It proves once again that termites are able to build houses where they can live for several generations. published
