The first real breakthrough in reducing the cost of batteries for electric vehicles in recent years!
3M holds several U.S. patents for cathodes of batteries made from nickel, cobalt and manganese. Cathodes made from NCMs offer an outstanding balance of power, thermal stability and low cost. 3M and LG Chem have agreed to use these batteries to sell batteries in the U.S. and in most global markets, including Korea, China and Europe.
LG Chem currently manufactures batteries for Chevrolet, Ford, Hyundai and Renault that use spinel-type manganese cathodes. Using NCM cathodes will help reduce the cost of batteries and lead to an increase in range on a single battery charge. These two aspects are crucial to attracting a large number of buyers. Range is a critical factor for potential buyers of electric cars, especially charging infrastructure will remain in its infancy.
While smaller batteries are cheaper, making it possible to lower the cost of an electric car, owners still want to know that they won’t have to spend much time waiting for the battery to charge.
LG Chem plans to offer a new chemical technology as the basis for an affordable car with a range of 320 kilometers in 2017. LG Chem will soon offer more capacitive lithium-ion batteries that can store 80 to 120 kWh of electrical energy. Batteries of this volume can increase the power reserve of an electric car to 530 kilometers on a single charge. Such batteries have the potential to dramatically shake up the electric vehicle market and gain high adoption. published
P.S. And remember, just changing our consciousness – together we change the world!
