Swiss electric car sets acceleration record
The Grimsel electric racing car, developed by students from the Swiss Higher Technical School of Zurich and the University of Applied Sciences of Lucerne, set a world record for acceleration. According to the technical school, the car was able to accelerate from zero to one hundred kilometers per hour in 1,513 seconds. During this time, it covered a distance of just under 30 meters.
The machine set a record on the runway of the airbase Dubendorf near Zurich. 30 people worked on the creation of the race car. The electric car is made of carbon fiber and its weight is only 168 kilograms. The machine is equipped with a motor wheels capable of developing a power of 200 horsepower and a torque of 1700 Newton meters.
The previous acceleration record belonged to the E0711-6 electric car, developed by a team of Green Team students from the University of Stuttgart. In July 2015, their car was able to accelerate from zero to one hundred kilometers per hour in 1.779 seconds. The E0711-6 is also equipped with four motor wheels with a torque of 1,200 Newton meters.
Last July, Green Team surpassed the previous record set by Grimsel in 2014 by just 0.006 seconds. Then the Swiss racing electric car was able to accelerate from zero to hundreds in 1.785 seconds.
The fastest production electric car today is considered Tesla Model S, accelerating to a hundred kilometers per hour in just 2.8 seconds. For comparison, the Bugatti Chiron gasoline car, the record holder for acceleration among cars with an internal combustion engine, can accelerate to hundreds in 2.5 seconds. The car is equipped with an engine capacity of 1480 horsepower.
