A new system of forecasts of solar activity can save hundreds of millions of dollars
The innovative system of forecasts of solar activity Sun4Cast was developed by scientists from the National center for atmospheric research (towards) in Colorado. The developers claim that their predictions are much more accurate (50%) than predictions of existing similar systems.
Forecasting solar activity is complicated by a number of atmospheric factors that are difficult to predict in advance: air quality, location, and type of clouds, relative humidity and other atmospheric conditions. System Sun4Cast in their projections uses a different scheme of computer modeling, atmospheric observations, and artificial intelligence technologies to provide users with a detailed forecast with a time interval of 15 minutes.
The system makes forecasts for 72 hours (three days) that will allow network operators to use the data on solar activity during the formation of the network load. Thus, utilities and operators of power grids will be able to regulate the participation of solar power plants in the total energy supply in balance with other energy sources (gas, coal, wind, nuclear, etc. power plants) without affecting the stability of power supply and load power supply networks.
