MIT's UAV avoids obstacles at a speed of 48 km / h

A team of researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has developed a technology for the navigation of its unmanned aerial vehicle. This technology enables the UAV to evade the obstacles (in this case - tree branches) at a speed of 48 km / h. At the moment it is the most advanced navigation system for aircraft of this type. Called System Pushbroom Stereo , and it is designed Barry Adam (Adam Barry) and Russ Tedreykom (Russ Tedrake).

"Now everyone is doing drones, but no one knows how to prevent collision with obstacles UAVs" - says Barry, a developer of navigation systems. "Sensors such as lidar too heavy to install on a small device aerial and mapping of terrain on the fly - not very practical method. If we want to fly drones quickly and thus oriented in the surrounding space, we need faster, better algorithms, "- he continues.

When you create a system does not use any special details - it all can be bought in the store, including the camera and processor. The total cost of the project, according to Barry, is $ 1,700.

Drone developed by MIT, is now not only the UAV, which is able to fly through the forest, dodging obstacles. Similar UAVs have already been shown - it is, for example, Asctec Firefly camera RealSense.

But previous UAV flew more slowly. According to the developer of a new navigation system, formerly drones mapped the surrounding area, using just the points (for example, at a distance of 2, 4 and 6 meters from the unit). A Pushbroom Stereo only works on points at a distance of 10 meters. However, it is not clear what will make the drone, if after identifying the object at this point will be something else (falling bump Hopped protein, etc.).

However, now it is the best there is among navigation systems for drones.
