Ancient Roman gladiators were fat

Ancient Roman gladiators were not slim and muscular as they are portrayed in contemporary films and are overweight. For a set of body fat, which serves as additional protection from wounds in battle, gladiator diet consisted almost entirely of barley and vegetables, that is was in fact vegetarian. Such conclusions were made on the basis of archaeologists studying the remains in the only known cemetery of gladiators, located in Turkey, near the ruins of the ancient city of Ephesus.
