Scientists have developed a mathematical algorithm that allows you to get out of traffic jams

According to the basic mathematical models of road traffic, traffic flows are divided into three main types. The first can be described as free flow, in which cars are moving at top speed. The second type - when the cars are forced to move at a slower speed, but before full braking is not reached. Finally, the driver's nightmare - the third type of traffic when the speed of traffic flow drops to zero. In this case the vehicle is moving or standing alternately.

Experts Seoul University analyzed how the transition between these three phases. Based on these data, they have developed a simple algorithm that allows you to quickly move from the third to the second phase, and after it in the first.

In order to explain the process of "sucking tubes," they all drivers are divided into two types - "optimists" and "defensive". First, at the risk of immediate maneuver to enter into the trunk of standing in front of a car, slow down, only once from him a short distance. "Defending" drivers on the other hand, is left between his car and the next in the flow of much greater distance than is required for security reasons.

As a rule, "defensive" position of the majority of drivers takes already being in a traffic jam. Meanwhile, if the majority do the opposite, that the information they stop signals would be transmitted through the chain much earlier and forced the flow to slow down before the entrance to the main mash. In other words, if the cars drove up to the jam, will leave the greatest possible distance between himself and the next car, and those who leave the cork - as little as possible, the length and intensity of the jam automatically reduced to a minimum.

According to the authors - Kien Heng Lee and Bong Joon Kim - to help implement this algorithm should be the widespread use of modern automatic computer control systems (such as cruise control). By tracking the movement of other vehicles, the onboard navigator of the new generation will be able to automatically reduce speed and increase where necessary, thus minimizing the human factor.
