Many have long suspected that the brains of men and women is very different. Now researchers from the University of Cambridge have found what it was: thanks to 20 years of various studies in the field of neurosciences, they were able to create a map showing how the two sexes are different.
The average volume of the brain in men by about 8-13% more than women. Also, in men, usually larger volume of the intracranial space (12%), total brain (11%), cerebral (10%), gray matter (9%), white solid (13%) region filled with cerebrospinal fluid (at 11, 5%), and cerebellum (9%).
On closer examination, researchers found that the differences between the sexes can be traced mainly in a few areas of the brain: they are part of the limbic system, responsible for emotions and the language system.
The study may have implications for psychiatry, especially for the study of autism and depression - it may help to understand not only the typical differences between the sexes, but also mental disorders are closely associated with gender.
In total, the study included 126 scientific articles, which said about the structure of the brain from newborns to 80-year-old participants.
