For many years, scientists believed that our noses are able to distinguish some 10,000 odors. But researchers at Rockefeller University and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute after a series of experiments and analysis of results came to a stunning conclusion: the human nose can discern one trillion odors.

Biochemist Vosshell Leslie, one of the authors of the study, asked the group of the 26 men and women to sniff complex mixture made from 128 molecules with different smells, while in two of the three vials was the same smell. Group sniffed vials and determine which flavor is different from the other two.

Men and women are rightly recognized the smells, the contents of which differ by more than 50%. What we are able to distinguish a trillion odors, the researchers calculated by extrapolation. They stated that their estimate is probably too low, given that the odors may contain more molecules than the mixture used in the study, and the molecule can be combined in different proportions.
