The tree is surrounded by a large number of trees is almost the same size. To avoid damage from tourism, the exact location of the tree was not disclosed to the public.

Hyperion was opened August 25, 2006 by naturalists Chris Atkins and Michael Taylor. The wood was measured, its height was 115.55 meters in height. The tree was found in a remote area of National and State Parks Redwood acquired in 1978. The exact location in the tree was not opened to the public, for fear that the tourist traffic can disturb the ecosystem of life of the tree. Size of the tree is estimated at 502 cubic meters, and its approximate age of 700 - 800 years.
