In today's digest "Simple Science" we have decided to include the experiences of our books. Despite the fact that children's books, these experiences are quite capable to surprise many adults.
In this issue:
nails in equilibrium; of red chemicals; a clean spoon; the water climbs up; soda on edge.
Nails in equilibrium h4>
The design of the nails is not falling apart because the upper nail keeps hanging from falling all the nails that hold hats for him. But hanging nails also hold the top nail drop, pushing it to the bottom of the nail caps. This is the first balance. But the second balance when all the nails have become a single entity and begin to stick to a single vertical nail, because it turns out that the center of gravity is in the middle of the structure, thus is lower than the fulcrum.
of red chemicals h4> < br />
Red cabbage juice contains a special pigment that is sensitive to the acidity of the solution - it changes color from red in an acid solution (vinegar) to blue in alkaline solution (soda). Besides cabbage similar property have many dark-blue berries and vegetables: beets, blackberries, black currants, blackberries, blueberries, cherries, dark grapes. Juice solution in water has a purple color. When mixing vinegar and baking soda solution reaction occurs with release of carbon dioxide bubbles, and the acidity becomes closer to neutral - the solution color becomes closer to violet.
clean spoon h4> < br />
Dark patina on spoons comes from the fact that the metals that make up the spoon, oxidized. Aluminium, thanks to a solution of soda, selects the oxygen itself, thereby restoring the original appearance to the spoon.
The water climbs up h4>
When heated, the air inside the bottle extends. When we drop a bottle warmed in cold water, it begins to cool rapidly, and with it cools and the air trapped inside. Cooling down, the air is compressed and sucked colored water. While the temperature of the bottle and the water is not equal, the water will rise higher. Make sure that the bottle did not get the air out of the room - immerse the bottle as the suction of water.
Soda on the edge h4>
If the amount of soda leave a little more or less the contrary, the center of mass of cans and soda will be shifted to the left or right, and the bank will fall. The principle of this experiment is similar to the experience of "nails in equilibrium": for sustained position of the object need to have its center of gravity is aligned to or below a fulcrum.
