Skyscrapers in Red Square (9 photos)

Even before the construction of the famous Stalin's skyscrapers, Moscow planned to decorate the tall buildings of glass and concrete. Looking at the architectural projects of the architects of constructivism, it is difficult to imagine that they could be in the 30s of the last century, they were so ahead of their time, which is not lost relevance today. One of the most controversial projects and incredible projects was the building of the People's Commissariat in the Red Square in Moscow.

The stated construction area of 4 hectares supposed demolition of several old streets. The platform chosen adjacent to Red Square, just in front of the mausoleum, on the spot where now stands the GUM. In its place was supposed to build Narkomtyazhprom, a sample of the Soviet government building. One of the most exciting projects submitted to the competition, was the project architect Ivan Leonidov.

"I think that the architecture of the Kremlin and St. Basil must be subordinated to the architecture of the House of People's Commissariat, and the building NKTP should take center stage in the city." Ivan Leonidov. From the explanatory note to the draft.

Historical reasons have to be subordinated to the principle of artistic composition contrast the leading object ...

The project center of the composition is high-rise towers, the choice of which is caused by the functional and architectural considerations (requirement of harmony, composition, movement, spatial, value). The low part of the building (hall, stands, exhibitions, rear body) in its height meet environmental architecture and are built in a limited compositional contrast of the lower plan.
Three Towers. First - rectangular in plan, with a slight spatial riding, facade facing the Red Square. The top of the glass towers, terraces with hanging metal construction (stainless steel).

The Round Tower is conceived as a contrasting one, picturesque shape and handling. Tower processed terraced grandstands. A material - glass brick that allows you to maintain the integrity of shapes using textured material unusual effects ... At night, the tower will stand out with its bright silhouette barely visible grid construction and dark spots terraced bleachers.

The third tower is conceived in terms of space, simple and austere facades. Red Square is divided into two terraces which are at different levels, which makes it possible during military parades to achieve new effects (eg, empty tanks in the same plane, in another cavalry ...)
Terraced principle of solving the area and provide good visibility of the Mausoleum.

Three different height and silhouette of towers interconnected at different heights transitions had to be visible from all over Moscow and its suburbs. In the evening, one of the towers, with a fully glass facade, would create a cosmic spectacle.
