Barrel of Death (South Fort Balaclava)
A small photo report from our summer adventures under the cut 30 photos + text.
Waking up early in the morning somewhere in the mountains near Balaklava, we were pleasantly surprised to discover views:
Samuel had to spend the night here in these conditions:
Making a few photos of the quarry, we have set out.
The coming day promised to be quite busy. In addition to the local sights, we are still waiting for an exhausting trip on their two-wheeled companions to Yalta, and it is about 80 kilometers of endless climbs and descents with zaplechnikom on the Crimean harsh climate. Who rode on those or similar places, I think, should I understand how difficult this road is given.
Balaklava Bay:
Ruins of the Genoese:
Start climbing uphill
...
...
El Camino del Rey local scale
And here is the "barrel of death." Climb it, of course, on such a slope we had no way, so we had to turn around and find more or less suitable for this place.
Here's the plot in particular was given us very hard. Unfortunately, the picture does not convey the actual angle of inclination of the road
After overcoming it, staged a small privalchik:
...
Having spent all their reserves of water, we moved on towards the fort, and soon made the first discovery - Ahead one of casemates:
...
Inside:
Shotgun loophole installed at the entrance to the facility:
...
Moving on.
...
Another dungeon:
Behind him is opened here this picture:
...
Initially, the fort were two such "holes", but one of them was hit by German artillery during the assault of Sevastopol in 1941-42. Rumor has it that in the "barrel" red commissars were shot and then dumped them down during the Civil War. Confirm the legend traces of bullets on the inner surface of the barrels, which are located at the level of a man's head. The real purpose of these facilities is to observe the enemy and adjusting fire long-range artillery fort.
...
At the foot of the mountain you can find here is such a memorial dedicated to the events of the spring of 1944, when he was relieved of Sevastopol.
But this is a German military cemetery, established in 1998:
In total there have been reburied near 5, 5000 the remains of German soldiers. Each bears the name of the deceased soldier here on a marble slab:
