Taum Sauk - most unusual in the world of HPP

The world is quite a large number of hydroelectric power plants and almost all of them are located near large rivers or lakes, or on the water source. But Taum Sauk violates the standard logic and is located in the mountainous part of San Francois Missouri nearly eighty kilometers from the nearest natural source of water - the Mississippi River.

Such an unusual HPP was built in 1963 in order to meet the high consumption of electricity during the day. When the local power experienced a shortage of electricity, water from the vast reservoir fed through the turbines to the lower reservoir, located on the eastern shore of the Black River. At night, the electricity consumption is much lower than during the day. So at night the electricity available in the power system, is used to pump the water back. Thus, the water tank, if the battery is gigantic, stores excess energy.
