Largest "swan"

Largest "swan": the length of 54 m; curb weight of 267 tons, maximum takeoff weight - 275 tons
The wing span at the minimum sweep (20 degrees) - 57 7 m with the intermediate (35 degrees) - 50, 7 m, with a maximum (65 degrees) - 35, 6 m

The largest supersonic aircraft in the world. The most formidable bomber capable of carrying cruise missiles. And - most graceful weapon. We consider the Tu-160 on all sides.

According to the classification of NATO, these strategic bombers bear the name "Black Jack" (but on American slang - "bludgeon"). However, our pilots dubbed them "white swans" - and it's more like the truth. Despite the formidable armament and tremendous power, supersonic Tu-160 is strikingly elegant.

Each one - piece and very expensive product. In the entire history it was built only 35 of these aircraft, but they remain intact even less. But they - the real pride of Russia and the storm her enemies. They - the only planes, each of which is like a ship, has a name - in honor of the epic heroes ("Ilya Muromets") and designers ("Vitaly Kopylov"), Champions ("Ivan Yarygin") and, of course, pilots ("Valery Chkalov "," Pavel Taran "and others).

Bomber became "our answer" to the American program AMSA (Advanced Manned Strategic Aircraft - «strategic development of manned aircraft") in which was developed the well-known B-1 Lancer, and a remarkable response. Substantially all of the characteristics of the Tu-160 are significantly ahead of its main competitors - the US Lancer'ov. The rate of "swans" is higher to 1, 5 times as much greater combat radius and maximum range. Traction engines more powerful than almost doubled. And it does not stand comparison with them much less successful "invisible» B-2 Spirit, the design of which is in favor of stealth was born, it seems, everything is possible, including load capacity, stability and flight distance.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union existed in the presence of the Tu-160 were divided between the republics. 19 of them were based at the airbase 84th Guards Bomber Regiment in Pryluky, went to Ukraine. Eight of them were transferred to Russia for debt for gas, and the rest were simply sawn (last Ukrainian "swan" turned into a museum and can be visited in Poltava).

From Russian planes caught in a lost: in 2003, the plane "Gromov" (hull number 01) crashed on approach with all hands. The other "swans" are alive to this day. By the beginning of 2001, according to the SALT-2, in the service of Russia left 15 Tu-160, 6 of them were armed with strategic cruise missiles. Since then we entered the service of a few of the Tu-160, and having been modernized, received, among other things, more efficient engines, which enabled further increase the range.
