Physicist paparazzi (7 photos)

The interest of physicists know, probably, the name of Karl Stёrmera (1874 - 1957) - Norwegian geophysics, mathematics, researchers auroral phenomena, the author of the method of numerical integration of ordinary differential equations, a member of the Paris Academy of Sciences, Royal Society of London, a foreign member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Stёrmer known in Norway is also the other side - one of the first Norwegian photography enthusiasts. Moreover, it is not normal.

In 1893, while still a student (first photo in this post), so-called acquired Stёrmer "Spy" camera, which is armed, took to the streets of the Norwegian capital Christiania (Oslo) to impress on all the negative (see. Photo) passing by passers-by (mostly young girls). Flat pancake camera was hidden under his jacket and lace shutter fits in your pocket. Stёrmer sauntered along the main street Karl Johans, made six shots and ran home to the lab to show, print and shot accurately record the names of people he knew who have fallen into the lens of the camera.

I must say that it turned out he had a very good idea. People in the pictures look natural, outdoor atmosphere transmitted exclusively significantly. For example, a portrait of the great Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. The old man is somewhere on Karl Johans gata away from the center to the train station.

And here Stёrmer saw on the street of his future colleague and teacher, the famous physicist Kristian Birkeland (his portrait adorns banknotes in denominations of 200 NOK). Attentive Birkeland noticed a hidden camera and, it seems, the not very happy with the fact that he was photographed.

More than half of the five hundred surviving negatives - with images of young girls strolling down the middle of Christiania. Age photographer dictate its terms to select models.
