Ait Ben Haddou - Ksar (fortified city) to the south of Morocco, 29 kilometers north-west of Ouarzazate. Since 1987, under the protection of UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Ait Ben Haddou is located on the left bank of the river Ouarzazate on the hillside. River Valley runs through the desert; River starts on the southern slopes of the High Atlas and in the future is lost in the sands of the Sahara. She ran along the caravan route from Marrakech via Zagora to Timbuktu. Ksar allegedly originated in the XI century to guard the caravan route. After reducing the importance of the trans-Saharan trade fell into decay, the population gradually move to a new village on the opposite (right) side of the river. By the 1990s, he was in Ksar ruinirovannom state, there lived only ten families. Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou is one of the most typical examples of traditional Moroccan adobe architecture prevalent in predsaharskoy area south of the High Atlas. All houses are built of Ksara red-brown clay. Houses with flat roofs are located on a hillside terraces, the streets run horizontally and are connected by arches and narrow passageways. The Ksar has four inputs, two free (far left and far right) and two toll. Free entrance leads through a gate in the wall, while the toll pass through the home and belong to two families; in one of the entrances to the museum is located.
