The Large Hadron Collider
The author went on one of the most difficult parts of the installation ever created by man - the detector CMS.
Total of four detectors, they are connected to the 30-km magnetic system, all together it is called Large Hadron Collaider (Large Hadron Collider).
We visited Point 5 - Compact Muon Solenoid (Compact Muon Solenoid), CMS
The huge hangar in the picturesque place in France - the land is part of the structure
This hangar was first assembled and tested the detector (length 20 meters, a diameter of 14 meters, and weight - 15 thousand tons)
On the wall next to the mine hangs a life-size photograph made after these test runs
Once convinced that the detector works, it was dismantled into 11 parts and one (weighing between 1,000 and 3,000 tons) was lowered to a depth of 100 meters, at their workplace
Here on the wall hung a scheme and magnets
Because we went into the hangar KontrolTsentr with a very beautiful door
Several rooms in which many, many, many, many monitors to celebrate liquid from these bottles, for some reason we did not ask :)
A little further on, in the hallway is the layout of the detector (acting, that is flashing and all clearly demostriruet)
And here begins the mystery of wires, pipes and mysterious devices :)
Before launching the elevator is necessary to put all terribly uncomfortable and ever falling helmet
And here we are at the bottom!
Relatively lower rooms can be divided into two - the detector itself and computer rooms, which is the primary data processing
These areas are separated by a 7-meter high concrete wall we first got into the room the first trigger - machine complex, which from 40 million events per 3 milliseconds must select 400 and transfer them to the second trigger
This cable farms under the first hall of the trigger only one track detector (first level) comes 40 thousand Fibre Channel
And finally - he pyatnadtsatitysyachitonny detector! He met us in the divided state - is now at the LHC are working on upgrading Shirikov I was not with him, so that the overall view of the iPhone :)
Wires provodochki, cables ... Blue - food, green - the date
"Poke a screwdriver into the collider" a man in a plaid shirt - our compatriot :)
Everywhere threatening plaques and information about the current configuration and status of the detector
How all this will work ?!
By the way, there was a constant feeling that I was playing Half-Life :)
Next we went to the hall of the second flip-flop, which sent the first of the 400 event triggers selects about 15, and forwards them in the primary data center detector
Cooling Systems Computer farms Water, passing the farm goes into a huge tower on the surface
I thought it was candy turned out things in their ears - during operation, it is very noisy
Everything seriously :)
Climbing up on the ground, looked at the tanks with all sorts of gases used in refrigeration systems
It caps to wear to the magnets during transport
Corporate vest :)
And the last point has been the main data center - a place where finally recorded and stored event
A typical place of the administrator :)
Servers
"Let them here as mud» :)
