China to build world's largest lepton colliders

Until now, the main centers for the study of the microcosm is in Europe and the US. The world's largest Large Hadron Collider near Geneva is located on the border of France and Switzerland. China is still far behind the West - its biggest collider has a circumference of only 240 meters (BAC - 26 659 m). But by 2028 the Chinese intend to make a breakthrough in the study of particle physics. The Chinese Institute of High Energy Physics said to start designing lepton collider with a circumference of 52 kilometers and energy 240 GeV. In the future, the lepton (ie, one in which light particles collide - electrons and positrons) collider in the same tunnel can "upgrade" to bring the energy of the hadron and particle beams up to 70 TeV, which is several times larger than the maximum energy of the LHC (14 TeV) .

The project cost is estimated Chinese scientists at $ 3 billion. The Chinese are confident that they can build a 52-kilometer ring of their own. However, they also intend to compete for the right to build, together with other countries, "supercollider" in its territory. The fact is that the collider with a circumference of about 80-100 km and an energy of 100 TeV, which are already dreaming of physics - a project so ambitious that it will likely be implemented on the planet in one piece. China expects to participate in the fight for this project, along with Europe and the US.

The construction of increasingly large and powerful colliders allows to look deeper and deeper into the microcosm. The Large Hadron Collider has allowed to confirm the existence of the Higgs boson - one of the fundamental particles of the universe, which is responsible for the appearance of the rest mass of the particle. If the tank is allowed only to confirm the existence of these bosons, the new, more powerful colliders will allow them to study with all the details. For them, the "knockout" of the usual Higgs particle is completely ordinary working process, so physicists call them "Higgs factories».
