How to celebrate the New Year in the USSR and what the Soviet hostess treated guests
The beautiful far echoes in the soul with a special thrill for the New Year. No matter how controversial the Soviet Union may be, for many it cherishes the memories of a cloudless childhood and youth. Good family traditions were born here for centuries. If you do not know how to arrange the main celebration of winter, we invite you to the New Year in the style of the USSR!
Let’s talk about how to arrange a party in retro style. Outfits, gifts, festive table and entertainment program. Let’s take the best of the past and adapt to the present. Here we go!
New Year in the style of the USSR Decorating a Christmas tree in Soviet style is very simple. Many of us have old Union Christmas toys. A little retro will add imitating snow wool on the branches. And paper snowflakes on the windows. Flags and garlands in the form of lanterns, flowers and rings. Previously, they were carved from white sheets, old newspapers and even wallpaper. Colored paper was in short supply.
If the ceiling in the house is whitewashed with lime, you can create a “silver rain”. Rinse a strip of rain to a piece of cotton, moisten in water and throw it to the ceiling so that it sticks and flows beautifully. Special chic was considered garlands-planes and spaceships, as a proud symbol of the era of space exploration.
Adult Soviet citizens dressed up in their best dresses, costumes, ties and shirts. After the war, men often came to the celebration, decorating the costume with military orders and medals. To recreate the New Year’s image of a Soviet gentleman, a father’s or grandfather’s shirt (white or checkered), a gray suit and a gaggy or dull tie will suit.
The women's retro outfit will have to tinker. Soviet citizens climbed out of their way and made exclusive of what the light industry of the Union offered. They knew where they had “thrown out” a scarce jacquard trouser suit, where you can get a chiffon blouse or a crimple dress from under the floor. And also skillfully discolored curls with peroxide and for a week recorded in the hairdresser for a chemical perm.
So, dear ladies, to become a star of the House of Culture, you can dress up in a modest wool white dress with open shoulders and put on fashionable suede shoes. Don't forget the bright makeup. "Leningrad" mascara, tonal cream "Ballet", shadows for the ages Ruby Rose and an exclusive plume of perfume "Klima" or youth "Natasha" will complement your image.
New Year treats as in the USSR The festive table got the most tasty foods. The family budget of any engineer and worker quietly covered all New Year’s expenses. The holiday was not complete without the traditional chill, stuffed eggs, pouring fish, Mimoza, classic olive, Herring under a fur coat. However, salad peas often had to guard in huge queues at least a couple of weeks before the holiday, as well as sprats for sandwiches.
Fortunately, today we can easily recreate the menu of that era and buy fresh red caviar, expensive quality chocolate, sausage and beam, bananas and tangerines even on December 31!
Gifts in the style of the Union Here everything was quite canonical. Women received long-awaited elite perfumes like “Clima”, “Black Magic” or the more affordable “Can be”. The ladies also spoiled their men with perfume with a character like Triple Cologne or Russian Forest. But to give your loved one a tie, shirt or cufflinks was considered moveton.
Today, you can get a real "Triple" only from collectors, because this cologne is no longer produced. Therefore, for a retro party, you can bring any scarce product of the Soviet era: delicacy caviar, good chocolate candies or canned pineapples.
New Year in the style of the USSR: entertainment As a rule, guests converged by 10 p.m. to spend the old year. The long-awaited “Blue Light” was launched on TV, then the Secretary General took the floor, and under the chimes the Soviet man drank his first sip of champagne in the New Year.
In order not to spend all night watching TV, let's add to the celebration a few modern entertainment.
Soviet dance and karaoke. What could be better than to amuse the vocal cords from the heart with your favorite songs by Alla Pugacheva, Valentina Tolkunova, Nina Brodskaya’s “January blizzard” and Lyudmila Gurchenko’s “Good Mood Song”? And to dance to the nostalgic songs of Muslim Magomayev, Sergey Nikitin, Bul Bul Ogly, Valery Obodzinsky or beat off an incendiary twist under the "Black Cat".
Instagram New Year comedy "Crocodile" We offer you a game on your favorite Soviet comedies. Guests are divided into 2 teams and receive from the leading leaflet with the title of the film. For example, “The Caucasian Prisoner”, “The Irony of Fate”, “The Diamond Arm” or “Carnival Night”.
In 20 minutes, each team must select a scene from the film and play it without mentioning the title. You can also parody famous Soviet humorists: Mikhail Zhvanetsky, Arkady Raikin, Roman Kartsev, Yuri Nikulin and others.

At Christmas, I rushed to my family, but I stayed late anyway, and when I got home, I didn’t find anyone there.
I recently arranged with my neighbor to help me with the housework, everything was fine until my daughter found out.
