When Gogol was little, he went to his grandmother and asked her to give him some hair. He made belts for his sisters. As he got older, he learned to knit on spokes, often making scarves for himself. His friends recalled that in school years the writer often walked in dirty and stained clothes. Also in the gymnasium, he acquired the habit of filling his pockets with sweets. He took everything he could from the table, and then chewed on gingerbread and pretzels secretly. This habit continued into adulthood. He did not allow servants to carry what was left after tea, he put it in his pockets and gnawed at work.

And most of all, he was unnerved by the size of his nose and the criticism of his works. In 1829, his poem Gantz Küchelgarten was published. Critics tore her to pieces. Even though she came out under his pseudonym, and his reputation was not threatened, he could not accept the criticism. Gogol bought all the copies of the book and burned them.
