Underwater wave power plant will provide energy 6 thousand houses in Britain
Off the coast of Cornwall in the UK will build an underwater power plant with a capacity of 15 megawatts, providing electricity to 6 thousand houses.
Company Carnegie Wave Energy (CWE) has received a grant in the amount of 9.6 million pounds from the European regional development Fund (ERDF). These funds will be used for the first phase of construction of facilities for the collection of wave energy with a capacity of 1 megawatt.
Microset equip in Cornwall on grid-connected test site, Wave Hub. The Australian company will set under water the CETO 6 unit, which converts wave energy into electricity. The name CETO is inspired by the Greek goddess of sea monsters and Keto. Submerged buoys move with the waves and energy is transmitted by cable to the pump. It directs fluid under pressure to the power station onshore.
Converter CETO will be installed in 2018. The second phase of the project will start in 2020-2021 years. Over time, the network capacity is planned to reach 15 megawatts which will provide electricity to about 6 million households.
The installation cannot be seen from the shore — it will be completely submerged under water, so visitors to the beaches not to collide with the buoy while swimming. Deep dive CETO also protects from storms.
In November last year, CWE has announced the first project of its kind in Australia. In conjunction with the state organisation Western Power company has developed an underwater system for installation on an interval of 10 km along the coast of garden island, a small island near Perth.
The energy of the waves is also used off the coast of Australia. In 2015, the company BioPower Systems has launched an underwater power plant bioWAVE. The system is 26 meters high and shaped like a Trident can be used on both the surface and deep water and is able to generate electricity on an industrial scale.
Wave energy is used for desalination. The project SAROS remove salt from seawater using high-pressure pumps for the reverse osmosis principle. Install the CWE can also be used to desalinate water.published
