Hydrogen HY4 aircraft successfully tested in the sky
Electric HY4 passenger plane made its first flight in Stuttgart. Tests of the device in the air lasted about 15 minutes. As a source of energy is hydrogen. According to the developers, H4 will open a new era in civil aviation.
The aircraft is equipped with an electric motor producing 80 kW/h. in Addition to power directly from hydrogen fuel cells, energy is stored in lithium-ion batteries, which are an additional source of power in moments of take-off, acceleration and climb.
The maximum speed of the aircraft is 200 km/h. the Plane weighs 1.5 tons, has a length of 21.3 meters and can cover a distance of 750 to 1400 km depending on flight mode, load and speed.
One of the main features HY4 – two separate fuselage with double cabins at both sides of the motor. This design of the hydrogen of the aircraft provides the "optimal weight distribution and higher productivity."
Each fuselage contains hydrogen tanks that supply fuel for 4 exchange membrane with a low operating temperature. They all constitute a single system that generates electricity from the chemical interaction of hydrogen and oxygen. A byproduct of the system is the exhaust in the form of water vapor.
"We can use these small planes as a taxi, says Josef Kallo, an employee of the German aerospace center. But we can also create larger units with a capacity of 40 passengers for regional transportation".The aircraft was developed jointly by companies Pipistrel, Hydrogenics, and Ulm University, specialists of the Stuttgart airport and the scientists of the Institute of engineering thermodynamics, DLR. published
