Refrigerator, generating energy through human power
In the U.S. award in the field of industrial design and engineering James Dyson Award won by the inventor Roger Feng (Feng Rogers). He designed a refrigerator that runs off a battery that is charged through the twists and turns of the special lever. Such a refrigerator would be extremely useful in developing countries where there are problems with electricity supply. In the first place the fridge plan to use for storage of medical preparations, namely, vaccines.
Roger Feng, who developed an innovative product, is a student at northwestern University in Chicago (Northwestern University). The purpose of the project Roger calls help in the distribution of vaccines in developing countries, because most vaccines must be stored at temperatures between 2 to 8 degrees Celsius. Storage conditions of vaccines in some countries is not respected – in the regional centers vaccines are stored in refrigerators, but in villages delivered at best in boxes with ice. The world health organization have concluded that the loss of vaccines in individual countries from this problem can reach up to 50%. But even worse than the loss of vaccines and money, is the loss of lives that could be saved thanks to the preservation of medicines.
In the fridge Roger Feng uses a special perforation metal, but more importantly there is a small generator that charges the battery due to the rotation of a special mechanical handle. The stored energy is used for thermoelectric cooling. While the first version of a refrigerator capable of working 15 minutes 5 minutes rotating mechanical pens, but for full operation of the device, he still will need improvement. But there is already a number of other serious advantages. First, it cools gradually, which does not allow for quick freezing and destruction of vaccines. Second, the refrigerator uses a cooling fluid, as do conventional devices, so it can't leak and is environmental friendly product. And thirdly – the estimated cost of the refrigerator should be no more than $ 50.
The invention of Roger Feng yet won the only American award James Dyson Award, for which the engineer received the award in $ 1400 and the right to participate in the international finals, which will be held in November. In the main final of the James Dyson Award will be attended by the representatives of 18 countries.
