Ultra-strong solar panels replaced asphalt in the car park
High-strength Solar Roadways solar panels. Eight years ago, Scott and Julie Bruso had the idea to replace the asphalt on American roads and parking lots with energy-producing solar panels strong enough to withstand traffic.
After years of experimentation and funding, a pair of researchers and their company Solar Roadways have unveiled the world’s first experimental parking space made of hexagonal solar panels! Road panels don’t just harvest solar energy, they’re also equipped with programmable LEDs and heating elements that melt ice and snow. One power plant is equivalent to a 3600 watt solar panel.
In addition to the fact that the parking lot will produce energy, it will also be on full autonomous power supply, which makes it possible to use underground communications more efficiently, which do not need to be clogged with capacious power cables. The lack of overhead power lines will result in no dead zones for cellular communication in the county. The cable corridor under the parking lot is able to accommodate all types of cables, including television, fiber optics for high-speed Internet and telephone cable. Another function of this incredibly smart parking lot is the collection, storage and distribution of stormwater.
Although the Bruseau couple’s smart parking is already operational, it still needs refinement to enter the commercial offerings phase. To that end, the couple launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indigogo, which began on Earth Day, April 22, 2014.
Currently, about 69 percent of the layer under the top glass coating of each hexagonal unit is made up of solar panels, but Solar Roadways is not going to stop there and wants to reach 100 percent. Funds raised as part of the campaign will be used to hire a team of engineers and other specialists, optimize the production process and start production. The goal of the campaign is to raise $1 million to solve all the tasks.
