The risk of postoperative mortality is higher in the weekend

Studies conducted by scientists of different countries, indicate increased mortality of patients undergoing surgery at the weekend.

So, Dr. Felix Kork and Professor Claudia Spies from Germany conducted a retrospective analysis of patients undergoing operation from 2006 to 2011. The study data 218758 patients, physicians found that if surgery is performed at weekends, the risk of death increased by 22 percent, compared to operations on weekdays. February was the most dangerous months for surgeons and patients – mortality increases by 16%, compared to the other months.

Studies of Japanese scientists confirm the data of our German colleagues. Analysis of 72 studies from different regions of the world, which covers more than 55 million people, also found increased mortality of patients during the weekend. Researchers from Tohoku University found that the risk of death in weekend increased by 15-17 percent. The authors say: "There are at least two potential explanations of our results. First, these differences reflect the low quality of medical care in the hospital at the weekend, and second, patients admitted on the weekend may be seriously ill. We believe that poor care at weekends is a much more likely explanation". The researchers conclude: "Our systematic review shows that weekend admission is associated with higher mortality compared with admission on weekdays".
