Inaccessible monasteries of the world - top 5
Most of these monasteries glorify the Buddha. However, there are Orthodox. Although, most often, they almost do not carry the power that was before. More like a tourist spot.
Meteora Monasteries are located in Greece and are considered one of the largest Orthodox centers in the country. Their age is about 11 centuries. In the heyday of these hills there were 24 monasteries. At the moment there are only six left.
Taung Kalat Monastery is located in Burma, in the middle of the National Park on top of a dormant volcano (737 meters above sea level). In order to climb to the monastery, you need to climb 777 steps. It is believed that on this summit live the strongest of the 37 Nats (spirits), revered almost on a par with the Buddha.
Bhutanese monastery Taktsang-Lakhang is located at an altitude of 3120 meters above the level, and also, clearly hangs at an altitude of 700 meters above the Paro valley. Panagia Sumela, according to legend, was erected in the fourth century AD by the Orthodox monk Barnabas, on one of the many chalk cliffs in Trabzon, Turkey. The monastery is located at an altitude of about 1200 meters and is considered the main tourist center of the Altyndere National Park.
Xuankong-Si is translated from Chinese as “hanging monastery”, and it can really be considered hanging, because most of the halls are located on wooden stilts that rest on a sheer rock. Also, the rock itself is one of the walls of the monastery. The peculiarity of this architectural structure is that it combines Confucian, Taoist and Buddhist altars in one complex. Most of the temple complex was built in the fifth century.
