The monasteries have always been strongholds of Orthodoxy, bastions of spirituality. With the construction of the monastery began the existence of the city, in ancient times they were conducted Chronicles and developed science.

1. Kiev-Pechersk Lavra

 

Kiev-Pechersk Lavra — the cradle of the Russian Orthodox Church. This monastery is located on the area of 22 hectares on the banks of the Dnieper river in Kiev. It was the first monastery in Russia, the base of which, according to the chronicle, put it, the future Metropolitan of Kiev Ilarion, the author of "sermon on law and grace".





Later his cave on the Bank of the Dnieper was occupied and expanded by the monk Antony in 1051. The first ground was built over a cave monastery appeared in the successor and disciple of Saint Anthony the monk Theodosii.

Lavra is considered one of the leading centers of Orthodoxy in Eastern Europe. It includes many architectural monuments: the complexes of short and long underground caves, monastic cells and chapels, walls, churches and bell towers.

 

2. Rila monastery (Bulgaria)

 

Rila monastery is situated in the Kyustendil region of Bulgaria, near the village of Pastra, about 120 km South of the capital city, and covers an area of 8 800 m2.

Stavropegic monastery was founded in X century by St. John Rilski in the upper reaches of the river Rila and is the largest in Bulgaria.





The monastery is one of the most important cultural monuments of Bulgaria, symbol of Bulgarian resistance against the Turkish occupation and the national revival in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The modern form of the monastery dates back to the NINETEENTH century.

The monastery keeps the relics of John of Rila and the miraculous icon of the Theotokos "Hodegetria" ("guide") with thirty-two rectangular walls with the relics of saints, one of the three most revered icons in the Orthodox Church of Bulgaria.

The most beautiful buildings in the monastery are: Church of the Katholikon, the library and the Museum of the monastery.

 

3. Serafimo-Diveevsky monastery

 

Women's monastery in the name of the Holy Trinity was founded in the second half of the eighteenth century the former Ryazan landowner by Agatha S. Melgunova, glorified among the saints as venerable Alexandra of Diveevo.

Diveevsky monastery in the Nizhny Novgorod region was built with the active assistance of one of the most revered Russian saints — St. Seraphim of Sarov.

5. Meteora (Greece)
