Niwaki (Cloud Pruning)

In Japanese gardens, trees are shaped and trimmed regularly. These formed garden trees are called niwaki. The word “nivaki” consists of two characters – “tree” and “garden”. Many people have heard the name “garden bonsai”, but this is not true. The word “bonsai” means “tree on a tray”, and niwaki always grows its roots directly in the garden soil.
