Causes of stress in children
Scientists at the University of Wisconsin found that maltreatment in the family affects the way genes are activated, and this has implications for long-term development of children.
In the new study, scientists were able to measure the on-off genes, through a biochemical process of methylation. The researchers found a link between parenting and a specific gene that is responsible for crucial aspects of social functioning and health. They found that children who have suffered abuse had increased methylation on several sites of the glucocorticoid receptor gene NR3C1.
Professor of psychology Seth D. Pollak says, "This link between early life stress and changes in genes may uncover how early childhood experiences get "under the skin" and give a lifetime risk."
Recall that a little earlier, scientists from New Orleans came to the conclusion that as violence in the family, DNA damage, shortening telomeres.
