Surely everyone at least once dreamed of a holiday in tropical Costa Rica. The stunning Casa Flotanta house from Benjamin Garcia Saxe brings to life dreams of the sun, the splashing of the Pacific Ocean waves and a hammock among the trees. Located in the province of Puntarenas, a private house is built on a steep slope with magnificent views of the ocean and the surrounding jungle.

Instead of tearing down the hillside, Garcia Saxe came up with a plan to use prefabricated modules mounted on stilts to minimize the impact on nature and create a home that exists in harmony with the environment. Plus, in addition, the house is earthquake-resistant, and only local wood (tick and bamboo) was used for construction. The house is also equipped with a rainwater collection system.

Casa Flotanta is a two-bedroom house built on a hill overlooking the jungle near the town of Puntaneras in the province of the same name. The initial project of the country house implied a partial breakdown of a steep hillside and the installation of reinforced retaining walls. Architects, however, came to believe that it would be too expensive, so the design was changed to using prefabricated modules that are placed on concrete supports. Then a wooden platform is installed around them. In addition to reducing the cost of the project, this allows you to leave nature in its original form, the house literally grows out of the jungle.

“For us, one of the most interesting aspects of this house is that it initially seemed impossible to build a residential building on a given plot. However, by being creative and making complex engineering calculations, we were able not only to build a house, but also not to touch the jungle around us, explains Benjamin Garcia Saxe.

The house plan was designed to maximize the view of the surrounding area, natural daylight and natural ventilation. The modules were built of galvanized steel to make them earthquake-resistant.

The whole house is sheathed with teak, which was collected on a plantation nearby. Teak was also used to create furniture, along with locally harvested bamboo. Rainwater is collected on the roof and then heated by a solar heating system. A photovoltaic system will soon be installed, making the house completely non-volatile.
