The advanced technology is designed to treat glioblastoma, the most common and dangerous brain tumor. Professor Mark Welland says that gold is used to improve the effectiveness of the drug. Particles made of noble metal easily penetrate into tumor cells and are irradiated with X-rays. This causes gold to emit electrons that damage cancer cells, making them more vulnerable to drugs.
In laboratory experiments on cells derived from human tumors, combining gold with a drug was significantly more effective than a single application. Welland says, "We couldn't find living cells." Importantly, we found no regrowth after 20 days.” In contrast, cells treated with cisplatin alone return within a few days. The researchers are now focusing on testing the safety of the method before incorporating it into widespread use.
