Archaeologists have discovered that ancient humans ate snails

A discovery made on the site of Cova de La Barriada in Spain-Costa Blanca, means our ancestors may have been more discerning consumers than previously thought.





Hundreds of burnt shells of snails were found in the ancient "fireplaces". Finding indicates: roasted snails were a particular favorite of people of the Paleolithic who lived between 31 000 and 26 900 years ago.

Dr Fernandez-Lopez de Pablo, who studied prehistoric samples, says: "In the excavations of prehistoric snails that were found along with stone tools and other animal remains, probably roasted in the coals of pine and juniper."

The archaeologist added, "In the neighboring areas of the Mediterranean snail appear, about 10 thousand years later. These newly found snail – the oldest known evidence that ancient human populations used them as a food resource in Europe about 30,000 years ago."
