Project Wing - delivery system gruzov for aid drone from Google + video
Google recently announced that it will now work on not only self-driving cars, but also another autonomous vehicle project.
According to the BBC and The Atlantic, the Google X team has been developing Project Wing for 2 years, which focuses on the development of a “delivery system” using autonomous flying drones. The system is very similar to Amazon’s drones introduced last year by CEO Jeff Bezos.
The main purpose of flying drones is not to satisfy customers who need a quick delivery of goods. It is aimed at using these drones during the liquidation of the consequences of natural disasters, in simple words, they could theoretically deliver various kinds of supplies to victims during a disaster.
“There are only a few drones that will be able to continuously serve a very large number of people in an emergency,” Google X said.
Despite these noble goals, Google said drones could be used to deliver goods to customers in the same way as Amazon drones. Dozens of people are currently working on the project.
The flying drone itself consists of four electrically controlled propellers with a wingspan of about 1.5 meters. Its weight is about 8.5 kilograms. A drone can take off and land without a runway. The entire weight of the loaded drone should not exceed 10 kilograms.
The drone's computer is next to the tail section and its power source is in the front of the aircraft. On board are the GPS satellite navigation module, camera, radio and inertial measuring sensor, which consists of accelerometers and gyroscopes designed to help the drone determine its position in space.
In the development of the project, Google found that when people wanted to take the product from the drone, they could get injured by its propellers. As a result, they came up with a new mechanism for the transfer of goods. To drop the load, the drone uses cargo packaging, detachable mounts and a built-in winch with a fishing line, reports TheVerge.
Google plans to create a special control system for the drone, with which computers can partially control it under the supervision of operators. Operators can take control of management at any time. This can be very useful in cases of problems during shipment. Google is also planning to make improved automated software like its self-driving cars.
The project was originally conceived as a way to deliver defibrillators to people suffering from heart attacks. However, the company faced the challenge of implementing the idea, as they would have to work closely with 911 and other emergency services.
Flying drones have already passed their first test in Australia. They delivered candy, dog food, livestock vaccines and water to local residents.
Google confirmed Project Wing by posting a video on its website.
